WHAT CONDITIONS DOES LASER EYE SURGERY TREAT?

We can use laser eye surgery to treat:

  • Short-sightedness - also known as myopia (from -0.5 units to -10 units)
  • Long-sightedness - also known as hyperopia (from +0.5 units to +4 units)
  • Astigmatism (up to 6 units)

We can also use laser eye surgery to accommodate for the near-vision loss symptoms of presbyopia (ageing eyes).

AT WHAT AGE AM I SUITABLE FOR LASER EYE SURGERY?

To be eligible for laser eye surgery, you must

  • be 21 years old
  • have a stable refraction for several years

Sometimes, we can perform laser eye surgery on people as young as 18. In these cases; however, we are making smaller corrections.

DO ANY OTHER HEALTH CONDITIONS PRECLUDE ME FROM HAVING LASER EYE SURGERY ?

Yes, however, we need to discuss these with you to confirm your suitability for laser eye surgery or alternatives.

HOW LASER EYE SURGERY WORKS

During laser eye surgery, we reshape of your cornea (the curvature of your eye) using a laser beam. You will not feel any pain during the procedure

We will explain the laser eye surgery steps in detail at the appointment, but here are the basic steps:

  1. We numb your eyes with eye drops.
  2. We either create a flap (in LASIK) or remove a thin segment behind the surface of the eye (with SMILE). With LASEK, we remove a small portion of the front surface of the eye.
  3. Finally we reshape the cornea

With laser eye surgery, we adjust the curvature of your eye so that light hits your eye correctly again.

After the recovery period is over (ranging from hours (Smile and Femtolasik) to a couple of days (Lasek)), you can see clearly again without glasses or contact lenses.

In the eye, the cornea (the front window of the eye) accounts for ⅔ of the refraction and the lens accounts for ⅓ by the refraction. With laser eye surgery we want to change the refraction of light in the eye in order to relieve patients of their glasses or contact lenses . Therefore, in young people we will first try to adjust the shape of the cornea with a laser beam. We will only use the option of a lens implant for patients who are 50 years old or older.

WHAT ARE THE BENEFITS OF LASER EYE SURGERY?

Laser eye surgery has the advantage over lens replacement in that it is categorized as extra-ocular surgery. In other words, we don't have to make an opening in the eye; so, we don’t need to work inside the eye. This, naturally, reduces some of the risk involved when compared to lens replacement. In addition, there are other advantages of laser eye surgery:

  • We treat both your eyes at the same time
  • you do not have to spend the night in hospital as laser eye surgery is an outpatient, outpatient procedure
  • If you are the ideal candidate based on the preliminary investigation, laser eye surgery is a very safe treatment

The procedure is only performed in a center recognized for laser eye surgery that meets several strict requirements. Every three years, and official and independent body inspects the laser center, with the requirements becoming stricter every year.

WHAT ARE THE COMPLICATIONS OF LASER EYE SURGERY?

We mentioned before that laser eye surgery is a safe procedure, which is why complications after laser eye surgery are rare. However, a patient may occasionally experience discomfort after treatment, for example:

  • experiencing circles around lights at night. This complication improves spontaneously in the vast majority of cases.
  • an over or under correction. This complication requires retreatment.
  • a corneal infection. This is a very rare complication.

The above cases only occur in a few cases. The over- or under-correction occurs on average in less than one percent of the cases. This means that >99% of patients return home with a clear view after one operation. In addition, we give patients preventive antibiotic drops after the procedure to reduce the risk of infection.

In summary, laser eye surgery is one of the safest procedures doctors perform on the human body.

ARE THERE ANY SIDE EFFECTS AFTER LASER EYE TREATMENT?

Immediately after the laser eye surgery, you may have the feeling that there are grains of sand in your eye. It is also possible that you are light shy or that your eyes are watering a bit. This period lasts only a few hours. We recommend crawling into your bed with the curtains closed and closing your eyes. If this does not help, you can also take a light painkiller.

Vision recovers very quickly for most people, especially patients who have had a SMILE and/or LASIK treatment. The vision also returns for those who had a Lasek treatment, but the recovery is simply a bit slower here. In the first few weeks, some people experience minor side effects , such as dry eyes or seeing circles around lights at night. Most of these complaints usually disappear like snow in the sun.

What are the latest laser eye surgery techniques?
PRK
  • Eye surgeons introduced PRK, the first generation of laser eye surger in 1988 . Although PRK is still a good technique with excellent results, healing is slow and some discomfort can occur immediately after the procedure. We typically use LASEK in the rare cases where a surface procedure might be necessary. LASEK, is an evolution of PRK.
LASIK
  • Shortly after the surgeons introduced LASEK, they introduced LASIK. With LASIK surgeons make a thin corneal flap on the surface of the eye (the cornea). They then flip the flap on its hinge before carrying out a laser treatment on the deeper layers of the cornea. With a LASIK procedure, a patient has little or no discomfort and he/she recovers almost immediately. There is, however, the presence of a corneal flap that heals in a few hours, and there is a slightly higher chance of dry eyes .
All-laser LASIK

All-laser LASIK (also known as Femto-LASIK, based on the femtosecond laser we use for the procedure) is an advancement of the traditional LASIK that used a blade. The extremely fast and precise femtosecond laser allows the surgeon to create a very accurate flap without a blade. All-laser LASIK;

    • Offers very fast recovery
    • Most frequently performed surgery
    • Is the standard treatment for more than 20 years
SMILE

SMILE is a flapless procedure, which means that no flap is cut in the cornea. This reduces the chance of dry eyes .

  • Comfortable & stress-free
  • Fast recovery
  • High Accuracy
  • Odorless and noiseless silent treatment

The latest laser eye technique, the third generation laser treatment, is SMILE. This treatment combines the benefits of PRK and LASIK and eliminates most of the drawbacks. After SMILE:

    • you will have a very stable and strong cornea after the treatment
    • your vision recovers very quickly
    • you have little or no discomfort right after the procedure
er is geen sprake van een hoornvliesflap vermits alles zich doorheen een kleine wonde afspeelt. SMILE is pure microchirurgie.
SHOULD YOU HAVE LASER EYE SURGERY OR LENS REPLACEMENT?

We can treat short-sightedness, long-sightedness and astigmatism with either a lens implant or laser vision correction. We choose depending on:

  • the anatomy of the cornea
  • the depth of the eye
  • the size of the pupil
  • the severity of the prescription

We always perform a very thorough preliminary investigation in which we determine which technique will suit you best.

WHAT DOES THE INVESTIGATION LOOK LIKE?

The purpose of the preliminary examination for laser eye surgery is to determine whether the cornea is sufficiently strong and healthy. In addition, we want to know whether there are certain conditions in the eye that prevent an optimal result. We only perform laser eye treatment when both conditions are met. By default, candidates for laser surgery undergo the following examinations:

  • objective and subjective refraction
  • pressure measurement
  • retinal examination
  • pupil measurement
  • specular microscopy of the cornea
  • topography
  • OCT scan of the cornea
  • Sometimes, depending on each individual examination, we perform additional tests.
THE OPERATION

Laser eye surgery doesn't last long. We provide approximately 30 minutes for the treatment of both eyes, but we are usually ready after 20 minutes. The laser correction itself usually takes a minute, the rest of the time is spent explaining and taking all precautions to properly adjust the laser and to ensure the equipment is sterile.

THE AFTERCARE

Your vision is usually still blurred for the first three hours after the procedure. Your eyes will feel slightly irritated and we suggest you keep their eyes closed. After about three hours, most of the nuisance has disappeared.

With Femto-LASIK and SMILE, your vision starts to recover from then on, with LASEK it takes a little longer. You can exercise and lead a normal life the day after surgery . Showering, is of course part of "normal life", and that is allowed. But take care that no dirty water runs into your eyes. Driving the car is usually possible the day after a SMILE and LASIK procedure. With a LASEK treatment, that again takes a few days longer.

By default, you should take antibiotics for one week and use artificial tears for a longer period of time. Artificial tears are eye drops that provide extra moisture for the eye. This avoids the possible side-effect of dry eyes, provided you use the artificial tears a few times a day. In addition, we recommend limiting alcohol consumption, as is the norm after any medical procedure.

DOES LASER EYE SURGERY EFFECTS LAST FOREVER? HOW LONG WILL IT LAST?

The changes the laser makes to your eye are permanent. You may be able to have an enhancement after the original procedure, and those effects will be permanent unless you have another treatment. The aim is to reshape the cornea to correct shortsightedness, longsightedness and astigmatism forever.

CAN YOU BECOME BLIND FROM FROM LASER EYE SURGERY?

You can never say that a complication is impossible . Nevertheless, in all the years that we have performed laser eye surgery, we have never had a blind patient. However, we advise caution. That's why we treat each treatment as if it were the only treatment of the year. We treat every treatment as if it were our own eyes or the eyes of someone in our family. After all, we know you only have one pair of eyes. They are one of the most precious, or the most precious senses, of a human being.

WHY IS MY VISION BLURRED AFTER LASER EYE SURGERY?

During the treatment, the cornea dries out a little. It is therefore normal that this has to recover for a few hours after the procedure. As soon as the cornea recovers, usually after three hours, vision is fully restored.

HOW EXPENSIVE IS LASER EYE SURGERY?

Laser eye surgery is not cheap. You should budget an amount between 1650 and 2500 euros per eye for the procedure.

Know, however, that laser eye surgery is for life and that you should compare this price with the price you would pay to wear glasses and contact lenses for the rest of your life.

With glasses, you will need to regularly buy new lenses and purchase new frames. Wearing contact lenses is also very expensive.
On average, after 7 years you will have paid as much for contact lenses as you would spend on laser eye surgery.

DO YOU STILL NEED READING GLASSES AFTER LASER EYE SURGERY?

The aim of laser eye surgery is to make the eye 'emmetropic'. A emmetrope eye is an eye that can see well into the distance without effort. Patients under the age of 45 can see well up close because their natural lens is more flexible. From the age of 45, the lens of the eye becomes more rigid, which makes it more difficult to bulge. Because of this, most people beyond the age of 45 who are emmetropic will need reading glasses to read. By 50 years of age, everyone will notice near vision loss. That applies both to people who were born with two perfect eyes, and people who were shortsighted and undergo a laser eye correction.

IS LASER EYE SURGERY MORE FINANCIALLY BENEFICIAL THAN CONTACT LENSES?

Contact lenses cost a lot of money in the long run. Annually, you can expect to pay €500 for daily lenses.
