Cataracts incidence / prevalence

Cataracts, is a natural clouding of the lens of the eye. A healthy lens is clear and transparent, but when the lens becomes cloudy and cataracts develop, the incident light is blocked. This reduces your vision.

  • Researchers believe that there are multiple causes of cataracts. Old age is by far the main cause. That is why 90 % of all cataract patients are older than 60 years . The average age of our cataract patient is 73 years
  • But did you know that cataracts can also occur in newborn children or young people ? In this case we speak of congenital cataracts, congenital or juvenile cataracts. Genetic factors are often the cause, but metabolic disorders, one-sided diet, malabsorption problems (for example after surgery for obesity) or vitamin deficiency can also cause cataracts
  • Exposure to UV rays may also have a detrimental effect, making people who are frequently exposed to the sun more likely to develop cataracts. The frequent use of sunglasses could therefore play a protective role here. There is also a suspicion that a diet rich in fruits and vegetables, and the use of antioxidants, could slow the evolution of cataracts
  • As the condition progresses, everyone will someday reach the point where their vision diminishes and after a while they will not see enough to go about their daily activities properly.

The diagnosis is made on the basis of a thorough eye examination.

The following investigations are carried out :

  • Biomicroscopic research
  • Measurement of eye length
  • Determination of the curvature of the eye
  • Visual field examination
  • Testing contrast sensitivity
  • Additional investigations if necessary.

On the basis of this data, the strength of the artificial lens can be determined, and possible other causes for the poor vision can be traced.

  • The first symptom you experience is usually very limited. You may notice that the light from the sun or from a lamp becomes too bright, causing you to see circles around these objects
  • Also at night you may notice that the headlights of oncoming traffic suddenly cause more halos than before. Afterwards you may notice a reduction in the sharpness of objects, or a slight blurring of colours.

  • Cataract surgery is the only option to treat cataracts , also known as cataracts. In cataract surgery, the cloudy lens is replaced by a clear artificial lens. Lens implantation is always done on only one eye at a time. If you do not have cataracts operated on, it can lead to blindness.

CAN CATARACT SURGERY FAIL?

Cataract surgery is one of the most successful procedures at the moment. However, as with any surgical procedure, as rare as this may be, sometimes complications can arise.

Possible complications include internal inflammation of the eye, clouding of the cornea, retinal swelling or retinal detachment. The chance of an internal eye infection is estimated to be about 1/3000.

A technical problem during the procedure is of course also possible, but the more experienced the surgeon is, the less likely this will occur.

CAN CATARACTS BE TREATED WITHOUT SURGERY?

Cataracts cannot be treated without surgery.

In the early stages, appropriate glasses or adequate lighting can help to read. However, if the cataract is too advanced, it will be insufficient to be able to read and perform daily activities. Surgery is then the only solution.

The clouded lens of the eye is removed and replaced with a clear artificial lens. Depending on the type of implant lens chosen, you may or may not need reading glasses for close work. For far you can usually see clearly again without glasses.

CAN I EXERCISE AFTER THE PROCEDURE?

Walking, cycling, golfing, and other sports where there is no direct contact, pressure or dirt on the eye, is allowed from the day after the procedure. Contact sports and swimming are best postponed for three to four weeks after the procedure.

WHEN CAN I RETURN TO WORK AFTER THE PROCEDURE?

You can usually work again the day after the procedure. Since you have to come for a check-up the day after the procedure, it is best to postpone the work until after the weekend.
