De normale vochttoestand van het oog
In een gezond oog is er voldoende traanvocht aanwezig dat zich egaal over het oogoppervlak verspreidt bij elke knipperslag. Dit heeft als functie het oog te bevochtigen en het afvoeren van vuil en stofpartikeltjes te vergemakkelijken. De traanfilm bestaat uit een waterige, lipide- en mucinelaag. In een normale toestand zijn de verhoudingen tussen deze drie lagen optimaal, kan het oogvocht goed verspreid worden en kan het oog meer dan tien seconden bevochtigd blijven zonder knipperen.
